The show brings together works by thirteen artists from Düsseldorf and the region who make important contributions to the art scene in Düsseldorf. Many come from the milieu of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and create consistently high-quality yet largely unknown artworks as artist’s artists.

The title of the exhibition refers to a mathematical concept: a polytope is a geometric figure that extends in any number of spatial dimensions. In this sense, d – polytop refers to a multifaceted dimension of points, corners, and edges, ultimately of diverse spatial formations in different spaces and times. At the same time, the title of the exhibition refers to the cubic, brutalist architecture of the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf itself and to the six-day exhibition ÜBER ECK in September 2014, in which the corners in the exhibition spaces and the architecture of the building served as focused areas of the presentation. d – polytop: Art from Düsseldorf is thus a continuation of the 2014 exhibition.

The International Music Academy Anton Rubinstein presents portraits and film stills of Hollywood diva Luise Rainer from the collection Michael Blatow at House Goldener Helm in the old town of Düsseldorf.
Luise Rainer (1910-2014) won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice: 1936 for the role of Anna Held in the musical film The Great Ziegfeld and the following year for the role of Chinese farmer O-Lan in The Good Earth. To this day, the native of Düsseldorf has been the only German actress to achieve this. The daughter of a Jewish businessman studied at the Theatre Academy of the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf with Louise Dumont and Gustav Lindemann. Max Reinhardt brought her to Vienna, in 1935 she was signed by Hollywood studio MGM. During the war years, she collaborated with Albert Einstein and Ernest Hemingway in saving refugees from Europe. After the war, she retired from the film business and lived in London until her death in 2014.
At every full hour, there will be a short musical presentation by members of faculty or students of the International Music Academy Anton Rubinstein.

In my head, on my laptop, in my archive, in my microcosm, in my environment…and in the world? How deeply are we humans involved, these days, in current events and also in the political happenings? How long do we remain observers and at which point do we decide to act? To what extent do we care about today, to what extent do we still think about yesterday and what about tomorrow?
Matter implies chaos – but how free are we and when and how are we constrained? The works in this exhibition look at the other, into the other and at the other in the familiar as well as at the familiar and the other everywhere. In the same way that we encounter others every day, so too we encounter ourselves over and over again on a daily basis.

In his work 643316. Die neue Ebene des Reisens.,Jan Ladwig examines the way society deals with progress on the basis of a failed project. A mixture of different pictorial levels, different narrative strands and forms of presentation reflects the complexity of a German success story. Political decision-making processes and communication strategies are used to tell the story of a patented invention from the 1930s that already anticipated its failure in its own maxim: “Flying at zero altitude.”

This year, Burkhard Eikelmann shows two exhibitions at once for the annual Duesseldorf Photo Weekend with the artists Heinz Innerhofer, South Tyrol, and Nils Müller, Hamburg. The exhibitions will be on display until the 6th of April 2019 in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel. Heinz Innerhofer presents two series of works with accompanying sound performances that were developed in cooperation with the musician Christina Auer and the composer Eduard Demetz. In the photographs of the second exhibition, Nils Müller opposes the visual overload of the capital city Seoul and finds calmness within the chaos.

In a medium of visual reproduction with an evidentiary character, it is the invisible ghosts that define the visible on the image. The visible feeds off its counterpole, the non-visible. The framing that the image represents makes reference to a complex situation. In the context of this situation, the framing is made into an image for us. The interpretation of the situation differs with the experience of the observer. Each observer perceives an image differently. The image is defined by an undefined and invisible ghostly space. These spaces can be shaped and produced in different ways. Although they accompany the photograph from the moment of its creation on, they are reformatted by manipulation. The ghostly spaces are thus made into cloaks of invisibility. The removal of visual elements is an effort to direct the interpretation of the image. These cloaking methods serve to make the photographic formulation more precise and understandable, and thereby take the image ever farther away from its original reference.

With their pioneering photographs Bernd & Hilla Becher (1931–2007; 1934–2015) within the history of the medium developed an aesthetic, with which they suceeded in creating new impulses for objective photography. This is illustrated in the current presentation of works that revolves around photos of coal bunkers. The exhibition is presented at the former Kaiserswerther Schule, where the Becher studio is situated.

The images are based on numerous trips and photographic projects about industrial plants, which the couple undertook in the 1960s, setting out from their adopted home in the north of Düsseldorf. Their intensive gaze, directed towards the individual structure from many sides, proved to be of central importance, as was the transfer of the assembled motifs into ‘typologies’. Larger overviews of complete mine plants illustrate as well a meaningful localisation of the coal bunkers within the landscape of a complex industrial plant. Very early on the Bechers recognised the historical importance of their motifs. Their photos are valuable witnesses of a largely long-gone world of work.

Robert Boday, born in Budapest in 1951, managed to flee from Hungary to Germany during the revolt against the sowjet occupying forces at the age of five, he now lives and works as a independent artist in Düsseldorf, Germany. Photography is his chosen and preferred field of artwork with whose artistic instruments he obtains reality traces of a poetic order. Poetry and Order? What does that mean? Let’s say: within his photographies, he is used to call them “images“, the artist Boday searches for pictorially phrasing in terms of standard felt reality but actually never meant to be picturesque or even quaint. Well, for him there rather are surreal, obscure and covered aspects of reality which the artist apparently centers in his focus. Content is casual in the literal sense, commonly overlooked, whose secret, scenic theatrics Boday reveals.

Gallery Franz Swetec is delighted to present a selection of portraits of Czech writers and intellectuals by Gisèle Freund (1908 Berlin – 2000 Paris) for the Duesseldorf Photo Weekend. Freund, born in Berlin with Jewish roots, studied in Paris and became an exceptional portrait photographer most well-known for her sensitive photo reportages and portraits of personalities from artistic and political circles of her time.

The 50 images on view are characteristic of Freund’s interest in capturing expressions of intellect and her passion for the literary world. She had a profound knowledge of literature herself and developed many personal friendships with authors she had met in Paris and elsewhere. In 1967 she attended a literary congress in Prague, where she met Milan Kundera and Václav Havel among others. The photographic oeuvre of Gisèle Freund has been internationally recognised in numerous exhibitions since the late sixties.

Sipgate shows presents Real Places, an exhibition of works by Simone Nieweg (b. 1962) und Laurenz Berges (b. 1966). The digitised world overwhelms us with a tsunami of photographic material and speaking in pictures has become seemingly grotesque. Non-reflective snapshots of meals, shopping and selfies are the daily routine. By contrast, Simone Nieweg and Laurenz Berges work analogously, producing large-format color photographs as paper prints. They have long developed their very own understanding of time, place and picture. Berges is constantly searching for abandoned places, with architecture left behind due to industrialization and social changes. Nieweg rediscovers nature. What appears distant and eludes from the occasional glance through demarcation or weathering, now comes into focus.

Horst Gläsker has been a part of the german and particulary the internationally reknown Düsseldorf art scene since the 1980s. After studying under Gerhard Richter and K.O. Götz, Gläsker took over a chair at the Art Academy of Kassel and other Academies. From the beginning of his Oeuvre, the artist is questioning the boundaries of art and thus his process evolved into interdisciplinarity and multimediality.

Gläsker’s famous so-called Pinseltänze (brush-dances) are often resulting from perfomances and are inspired by rhythm, music and dance. For his latest series, Gläsker is combining these Pinseltänze with photography. Capturing and digitally remaking these existing works, he’s creating completely different and stand-alone works as a form of Appropriation Art. These Photographic Paintings are pulsating. They’re pure rhythm – and “rhythm is the core of Gläsker’s major contribution to art” (Prof. Manfred Schneckenburger, director documenta 1977/ 1987).

Since 1988, the artist Michael Wesely has been creating photographic images in extreme time exposures. Motifs and events he is interested in determine the duration of the exposure: he focuses his camera on a bouquet of tulips for a whole week, it accompanies the Berlin Philharmonic throughout the entire score, as well as the three-year reconstruction of the exterior architecture of the Museum of Modern Art. In the Casa de Vidro in Sao Paulo, his lens follows the changes in nature and the changing lighting conditions for a period of one year.

Wesely has been working with time for decades. It documents his artistic work as a temporal and spatial process. It traces genesis, flowering and decay. What has just been captured in the picture is lost again, superimposed, condensed by repetitions. It becomes indistinct, blurred by elapsed time and traces of movement. The works by Michael Wesely are thus impressive testimonies of a living process.

Do you believe your own eyes? Can they ever be trusted?
The art of collage is the Pars pro toto of contemporary art. It not only implicates the process of allegorical montage – template strategies for a range of art, research or else curatorial practices – it also reveals something we forget about all too easily: the way images function in ways that are appropriate for our day and age – times of fake news, raytracing, memes, simulacra…

In presenting fragments torn from greater wholes, thus stripped of source contexts and transformed by the machinery of terrible imaginations, Weronika Gęsicka diverts our attention towards the notion that today every image exists in a thousand places all at once, in thousands of various contexts, and what is more – always turns out to be a sliver of itself, a trace smudged twice
over: (a) in terms of that which it represents, as well as (b) that which it happens to be linked to elsewhere. There are no other images – only if they are beyond history. In history, we are condemned to experience the incompleteness of the image.

The project space RFK inaugurates in occasion of the Duesseldorf Photo Weekend with the show skindeep featuring Sebastian Wickeroth and Timo Kube. Both artists are united by the grasp of nature and a sensual processing of materials.
Sebastian Wickeroth studied at the Kunstakademie Münster, at the Ecole supérieure des beaux-arts de Genéve and at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and is based in Düsseldorf. Wickeroth combines his photographs with soft, artificial colors. He creates sculptural and photographic works in which the deconstructing of the object plays an important role.
Timo Kube studied at the Kunstakademie Münster, at the Chelsea College of Fine Art London and at the Ecole supérieure des beaux-arts de Genéve and is based in London. Kube collects flint stones and changes their surface partially. Smooth, white surfaces appear, which create references to the human body. Both artists present works reminding on skin and figuration. Curated by Wilko Austermann.

In focus of the photo series Black White Gray is an authentic 1930s apartment in Kaunas during restoration – the interplay of the clear architectural forms and lines and the resulting dynamics of black and white.
Neringa Naujokaite also presents the video un altro … di vento, di cielo. The symmetrical, orthogonal video images of architecture alternating with landscape appear like a rhythmical sequence of black and white stills. The images recorded from central perspective partially merge into each other or they open up new architectural spaces, while the vocal sounds – electronically amplified and alienated – expand these spaces even further. The silent reality as the initial film situation works through the technical revision and acoustic background as a backdrop of the monumental stage set, in which the untouched natural or architectural landscapes appear alternately behind the slowly rising curtains.

We usually tend to think of China in Yellow or Red, but actually… is China Blue! Blue is the color of the workers, of eternity, sanity, purity and modesty. Against this background Yolanda vom Hagen lets the audience dive into life on Chinese streets. The pictures demonstrate the transformation of the cities through urbanization and modernization, when the small village-like Hutongs are replaced by the more comfortabe high rise buildings and their promise of modern living. In a second series the photographer created spontaneous relationships of people, whose lives usually go parallel, using a blue background. She thus brought Chinese people of different social backgrounds together, challenged their fixed social barriers and anonymity, to reflect on the multi-faceted face of the metropolis Beijing.

For the exhibition as part of the Duesseldorf Photo Weekend 2019, we invited students of the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, to show their positions on the topic of ‘interior’ and to work beyond photography in a reflective way with the space. A dialogue between photography, space, time and personal feeling shall be created. In social media, the photographic image almost exclusively serves as a depiction for a public perception. Therefore is our question: How do I perceive the outside and in how far does this influence the experience of my own self?

The artistic perspectives are different: Body spaces are being reflected, external spaces become metaphors of an inner experience, and intuitively staged objects become objects of reflection on the inner self. Some students have recreated spaces and studied surfaces to reconsider their effects. In a scientific investigation, the experience of the infinity of cosmic space and the universe, points out our own smallness and insignificance.

French photographer Hervé Lequeux and writer Sébastien Deslandes have been traveling around France for five years to meet, photograph and interview young French people from different suburb areas. “Une jeunesse française“, “a French Youth”, is an exhibit of their work.
Teens from Duisburg-Marxloh drew a parallel with this exhibit and the French Banlieues, as they gave their impressions of the own living environment they grew up in.
The photography exhibit “Regards croisés sur les quartiers” – “Converging views on the districts” – sweeps away prejudices and preconceived opinions, as it tells the story of the meeting with teenagers from so-called “problematic districts” in Germany and France. It peeks at the daily life of the teenagers, their expectations on the society and the democratic values on which they rely.

The photos were taken exactly 50 years ago, in March 1969, at Hilton Hotel in Amsterdam and the protest against war seems more up to date than ever. Elmar Welge was the only German photographer, who was permitted to take photos of the Bed-In for peace. From the view through the large windows behind the couple, one could make out the Amsterdam skyline. Yoko Ono and John Lennon had a relaxed air about them as they lay in the King-size bed, the ivory colored pyjamas corresponds with the colour of the bed linen and the small yellow Asters in the musician ́s hand, find its counterpart in the warm gold colour of a soft blanket. Make love, not war! was the massage from the couple, which is both equally simple but, also has a deeper meaning.

The portrait photographer Alexander Vejnovic is showing the artist Elisabeth Brockmann, who has been described by the magazine Interview as a “painter in photographer‘s clothing.“ Her work highlights the thin dividing line between indecent lack of respectful social distance and sensual attraction. The viewer becomes aware that he is the object of the display dummies‘ searching and relentless gaze, and he cannot avoid being mesmerised by the power of its attraction. In the light flooded premises of a former printing press in Stephanienstrasse, Elisabeth Brockmann is exhibiting artificial faces and other facades against the background of black and white rooms.

Paul Schwer (born 1951) developes with artificial materials installations, that are changing the surrounding. Schwer will create a site-specific work on the flat roof of the hotel friends. The photographs of the Chinese Du Zi are both beautiful and disconcerting. They show in brilliant quality huge landscapes marked by the signs of human progress. You see gigantic dams, artificially constructed coastal regions, open-cast mining, sand fixing in desert, mass dwellings in an inhospitable environment. The massive projects look like scars in the texture of the earth. Scar – that is how Du Zi named his new serial works. To achieve the optimum perspective he pairs his eye-level photographs with satellite images from Google Earth. The freelance artist, born 1968 in Taiyuan and graduated as a photojournalist in Beijing, has witnessed the rapid progress of his homeland and sees the global development as critical. He hopes his pictures will contribute to reflection on the relationship between man and nature.

The Gericke + Paffrath Gallery presents three photographers within the context of the exhibition Paraiso: Catherine Abitbol from Columbia, Lucia Fainzilber from Argentina and Alice Queresma from Brazil. All three artists are united by the representation of their reality in an imaginary world, a ‚Paraiso’.

Alice Queresma’s photographs question the assertion that photography always claims to be objective. The artist uses her fascination for the sea as a symbol of a journey and a place of discovery. Lucia Fainzilber plays with the subjective idea of the ‘Paraiso’ and in how far this ideal place can be filled with our different visions. Catherine Abitbol’s photographs interpret surrealistic impressions of a partly inspiring and sometimes sobering everyday scene. She uses either an intentionally or an arbitrarily chosen location.

These days, all things cube-shaped and every third chair trade under the catchword ‘Bauhaus’. Moreover, if you take a look at the varied centenary programme, it would appear that in 2019, at the very latest, the following catch phrase will prove to be true: “The Whole World a Bauhaus”. But why? Beyond the hype surrounding the anniversary, what resonates with the present day when it looks back? Alongside contemporary positions, the exhibition will reflect not on the legend of the Bauhaus but rather the vitality of the impetus that it provided. This includes questions concerning the trinity of art, technology and humanity, notions of gender, play and didactic impulses for society, the graphical, the handcrafted and textiles or the transformations of the physical – from human-machine to human-interface? – and these encourage taking a look back to the future. In parallel with the Duesseldorf Photo Weekend, one focus of the exhibition will be on the medium of photography. Yet, pursuing a concept based around a single medium would satisfy neither the Bauhaus nor contemporary thinking. Textiles, ceramics, photography, furniture, painting, book art and films will encounter each other. The echoes of history in the form of documents, graphics and, in individual cases, furniture will reverberate throughout the exhibition when ’19 meets ’19.

The exhibition is part of the Bauhaus anniversary in NRW. 100 years bauhaus in the west is a project of the NRW Ministry of Culture and Science and the regional associations Rhineland and Westphalia-Lippe. Patron is Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen, Minister of Culture and Science of North Rhine- Westphalia. It is being developed in cooperation with the Art History department of the University of Bonn.

With the exhibition Ex Machina, Ricarda Roggan approaches the essence of disused or obsolete machine objects. In austere objectivity, Roggan portrays items that have forfeited their function and have become legacies of an earlier era.

Wrecks of vehicles and decommissioned video game machines are arranged by Roggan out of the partial darkness. Both types of objects are victims of time – a virtual entertainment culture that could not fulfill their promise of futurism. She dissects photography in her own causal moment. Technique that portrays technique. The machine that illuminates itself. The light beam becomes the cathartic moment.

As part of the Duesseldorf Photo Weekend 2019, the Haus der Universität is presenting an excerpt from the great oeuvre of the photographer Eva Siao (1911-2001) with the exhibition My China.
Her black and white photographs are a unique testimony to China’s contemporary history and everyday culture. In a time in which public images are primarly meant to convey educational values and embody communist ideals, the photographer Eva Siao creates an OEuvre that documents socialist transformation, but also, with silent pathos, tells of everyday life in China.
Her granddaughter, Erika Siao, who lives in the USA, will join the opening. Martina Fluck, the German film director, is showing her documentary My Dream, My Love, My Hope. Memoirs of Eva Siao.

It’s all a question of perspective. The recognition that our perception and at least our image of reality are however, influenced by perspective, gets subtly reflected in the photographic works by Thomas Wrede. Between staging and reality, between truth and illusion, the photographer creates novel worlds of imagery that exclusively exist through photography and in photography. In his various photographic series he reflects on the longing for nature. At the same time, Thomas Wrede questions the fidelity of the photographic process.

In his series Real Landscapes, he creates impressive landscapes reminding of paintings of romanticism by using methods which let appear a puddle as a large lake or a pile of stones as a monumental mountain. In Wrapped Landscapes, the longing pictures are reflected in photographs of model railway trees, photographed in front of a possible natural setting inside their packaging. The photographs of his series Domestic Landscapes show photographic wallpapers in German apartments which are suggesting a view into nature.

The exhibition Altered Landscape presents new photographic works by Josef Schulz and Natascha Borowsky. Josef Schulz addresses the current appearance of Chinese cities in his works. Helle Jetzig creates works of art in his own particular way, with almost surreal magic and expressive power due to a unique technique simply called „painting and silkscreen print on photography“ by the artist, which is a multi-layered transparent painting on photo collage coated with many layers of varnish.

Motifs for his paintings are architecture and street scenes of the big cities, their structures and rhythms. In his works he is not interested in city portraits or certain pictorial statements but primarily in aesthetic qualities, in an intrinsically artistic reflection of painting and photography, concreteness and abstractionism, perception and reality, and in the composition itself, resulting from calculated photographic construction, subjective gestural painting and, not least, a controlled coincidence.

Every year, as part of the Duesseldorf Photo Weekend, the project Neighbourhood presents an exhibition of international artists that explores the concept of the neighbourhood at many levels. This year, the focus of the group exhibition, which is titled PL CZE HUN SVK BIH, is on the social transformation in Central Europe after 1989 until today – particularly in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Bosnia-Herzogovina. The exhibition takes a look at Europe as a geographical construct and heterogeneous cultural space that, particularly in recent years, has been increasingly raising questions about its future identity.

The exhibited artists – Iva Durkáčová, Tomoya Imamura, Christian Kasners, Joanna Kischka, Kalouna Toulakoun and Katharzyna Zolich – are all Europeans whose biographies exhibit a transcultural aspect. From this position they have carefully examined the issues that are currently besetting the European project, namely, isolation, national & European identity and cultural hegemony. At the same time, they identify with the European ideas of integration and democracy and, through their works, want to make a contribution towards a nuanced understanding of the situation in Europe.

The photographs of Chema Madoz, born in Madrid in 1958, subtly and ironically show paradoxical worlds of everyday objects. Ordinary objects that Madoz builds himself are placed in a new visual context in the environment of his studio. They are given a new meaning beyond their original function through playful interaction with other objects. What matters now is no longer their use or purpose. Rather, the objects are created solely in order to be photographed as assembled, partly surreal constructions. What is special about this is that the manipulation of the image worlds takes place on an analog level and is not caused by digital processing. Chema Madoz is one of the best known contemporary photographers in Spain. In the past, the artist photographed people in different landscapes until he turned to object photography. He is represented in many international collections and has been awarded numerous prizes. In over two decades, Chema Madoz has created an incomparable photographic oeuvre. Chema Madoz lives and works in Madrid.

On the occasion of the Duesseldorf Photo Weekend 2019, Setareh Gallery presents the double exhibition memo by Morgaine Schäfer (b. 1989) and Sabine Dusend (b. 1984). The overarching theme of the exhibition is ‘memories’ recorded or deleted by visual media. While Morgaine Schäfer shows photographs of analog ‘slide projections’ from her rediscovered family collection, Sabine Dusend illustrates the process of deleting private and artistic images from the memory of her digital camera.

The photographic works of both artists form thematic and compositional parallels and in the overall view create cross-connections as well as extended spaces of thought and interpretation that relate the variability and sensitivity of pictorial memories to media-reflexive and -critical discourses. A publication will be published on the occasion of the exhibition.

The multimedia installation If he looks like a dustman, and he walks like a dustman, he is probably a dustman? by Hannah Hummel is based on a visual description of the work of two waste disposal workers in public. The artist accompanied their team for several months at Düsseldorf ’s local waste management company.
The video was awarded the 2017 Prix Émergences by la Scam, le CentQuatre Paris, Arte Creative and the EDIS Foundation in Paris. Hannah Hummel studied at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Prof. Christopher Williams until 2016. Screening starts at 11 am, 1:30 pm and 4 pm

Paradise as a Laboratory, Work on Paradise

Paradise–Park– is a broadcast van of HSD. With film students of Prof. Anja Vormann and Prof. Britta Wandaogo the vehicle visits different places in the city. With an aim to get into conversation with the locals about the city, politics and urban planning, the van stays a few months on each location.
Images are the basis. They are collected or produced. They define atmospheres, personal moods and ideal places. They grasp the place and create planning utopias. They resist the architectural visualizations that lose sight of reality and increasingly capture the city from above and out of the virtual perspective. http://paradise-park.de/

Workshop Worringer Platz is a project initiated by Janna Lichter and Laura Oldörp where students have been conducting on-site photo and film workshops and talking to locals about pictures for a few months. Personal paradises are exhibited around the glasshouse at the Worringer Platz in form of sound and image.

Contrary to the widely held notion that war photography is a male preserve, there is a long history of women photographers working in war zones. Just like their male colleagues, they have documented crises worldwide and played a decisive role in shaping our image of war. As opposed to their male counterparts, women photographers often gained unrestricted access to families in their homes, of whom they took particularly emotional portraits. What is more, they worked at the front lines and took pictures of war victims that do not spare the viewer.

The exhibition presents around 120 works by eight women photographers from the past eighty years, among them Carolyn Cole (*1961), Françoise Demulder (1947–2008), Catherine Leroy (1944–2006), Susan Meiselas (*1948), Lee Miller (1907–1977), Anja Niedringhaus (1965–2014), Christine Spengler (*1945) and Gerda Taro (1910–1937). The photographers, whose subjects range from the European conflicts of the 1930s and 1940s to recent wars around the globe, employ a variety of photographic styles and strategies and tell their stories in many different ways, switching from neutral objectivity to raw directness or sympathetic engagement and empathy. They include intimate glimpses of daily life in wartime as well as evidence of shocking atrocities or illustrations of war’s absurdity and its dire consequences.

Thomas Rabsch is one of the most prominent portraits and reportage photographers of his generation. His pictures are characterised by an intense energy and an intimacy with his subjects. Whether he is discovering remote places, looking into Lady Gaga’s face or at the Beastie Boys at a Cologne bus stop – or whether he is taking a character shot of an actor or documenting Rammstein’s great stage moment at their concert in New York – Rabsch always finds a way to tell a complete story. He weaves open secrets into his photos and offers a restrained invitation to be curious about the people in them.

For the past three years, Rabsch has also had a significant influence on the work of the Duesseldorf Schauspielhaus with his ensemble and production pictures: on the occasion of the Duesseldorf Photo Weekend, we present a selection of his works from the fields of music, theatre and reportage under the title All Eyes on Me. The exhibition features portraits of Bob Geldof, Blixa Bargeld, Jamie Foxx, Jane Birkin, Julie Delpy, Nick Cave, Dave Grohl, Lenny Kravitz, Lang Lang, Metallica, Pharrell Williams and many more.

Dominik Geis (*1985) completed his studies at the Duesseldorf Art Academy in 2018 as a master student of Prof. Marcel Odenbach. His final work The Beauty of it, an immersive 3-channel video installation, was shown at KIT–Kunst im Tunnel, whereupon he was awarded the Baker Tilly Artist Scholarship .

figure 0100110 revolves around both archetypical and futuristic human figures, which Geis designed digitally in the course of his work on video installations and which are now implemented on coarse laid paper in the medium of cyanotype – one of the early photographic methods of image production alongside daguerreotype. With their ambiguous contexts and gestures, the figures become indecipherable blueprints of fine atmospheric nuances, attaining an intuitive precision through their openness of meaning.

Press photography is a diversified business. The photographer races to an accident in the morning, photographs the director of the art academy in the afternoon and an award ceremony in the assembly house in the evening. That is how it is today, and that is how it was 50 years ago when Volker Krämer recorded happenings in Duesseldorf in photos for the Rheinische Post.

The exhibition shows a cross-section of his work that gathers photos from receptions of urban society with photos from everyday and nightlife. The result is a differentiated picture of the 1960s in Duesseldorf.

When Czechoslovakia was occupied by the Soviet Union in August 1968, Krämer was coincidentally on site. His photos of the revolution and the effect it had on people travelled around the world. They will also be honored in the exhibition initiated by the Rheinische Post.

The question arises as to what significance digital media have for finding one’s way around in our world; as experiences that are made in the digital world can only be deciphered in the real world.
Will it be possible to make the new media opportunities one’s own, to incorporate them into one’s life and use them as a visual language? Losing touch to the real world because of the digital media would be fatal, as we derive our own picture of the wolrd by the construction out of real world experiences. In 2009, Uncertain States was founded by the artists Fiona Yaron-Field, David George and Spencer Rowell in London, England. In its basic idea, Uncertain States promotes lens-based art and nurtures a growing independent community that is not only increasingly joined by artists, but also by writers and scientists, who all share the same ethos: to strive for a future-oriented, constructive examination of social conditions and their developments, to reflect on core elements of social and political concerns and, in particular, to question as well as to challenge how perceptions are formed in society based on the medium of photography.

Under the direction of Astrid Gjersøe Skåtterød, Tor Simen Ulstein and Charlie Fjätström an offspring came into realisation in Oslo, Norway, in 2016: Uncertain States Scandinavia. Since its founding, the artist collective publishes a broadsheet newspaper quarterly, with each issue being dedicated to a specific topic. Apart from the publications, discussions, lectures and photo exhibitions are being organised regularly. During the past three years, the group has been taking part in several photo festivals across Europe.

On the occassion of Duesseldorf Photo Weekend 2019, Uncertain States Scandinavia are releasing their latest Issue 09, which revolves around the photographic portrait as a reflection of contemporary society. The magazine release is accompanied by an exhibition that showcases contemporary portraits of ten Scandinavian photographers at NRW-Forum.

The selected portraits with their individual photographic narrative strategies – equally confronting and challenging – are acting straightforwardly on the observers’ viewing habits. In consequence, they are creating a dialogue in which perceptions as well as personal and socio-cultural constructions of gender and identity are being questioned in its core.

In his static colour photographic images, the Düsseldorf-based artist Kay Kaul – who studied film and photography as a master student of Prof. Klaus Rinke at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf – succeeds in visualising dynamic processes as separate colour occurrences. In his works, Kaul, who worked successfully as a photographer and film cameraman after completing his studies, wants to produce a symbiosis between photography and cinematography. The artist thus works with a photography technology that was developed at the end of the 19th century by Adolf Miethe – three-colour photography. This process involves exposing the primary colours for any colour photography – RED, GREEN and BLUE – in succession through the appropriate colour filters on to a photographic plate or a digital storage device that, in the course of further processing, results in a unique colour copy that can be projected or printed. Through the time intervals – which can be selected at will – between the exposures it is only the dynamic processes that are marked with a colour change. The static image contents remain photo-realistically preserved.

The exhibition MIMIKRY featuring works by Julius Brauckmann, Jaana Caspary, Felix Contzen and Jonas Hohnke is showing complex positions, using photography to feign surfaces and imitate their surroundings.

Julius Brauckmann (born 1986) creates multimedial works, that are irritating and challenging the visitor. Jaana Caspary (born 1988). develops objects identified with a photographic surface. Felix Contzen (born 1981) camouflaged artificially pieces of nature and took pictures of it. Jonas Hohnke (born 1983) prepares objects that are imitating the room of the exhibition.

The project »Overcoming exclusive narratives« by Janna Lichter explores a space of communicative negotiation on a visual level for young Israeli and Palestinian women. In Israel and Palestine, the religious and ethnic-nationalist conflict has intensified over decades. The separation of societies prevents the communication of both groups and maintains prejudices and stereotypes. Interviews, videos, audio recordings and photographs allow an exchange between women to overcome exclusive narratives and to accept the existence of other narratives. The developed design methods are in a constant process.

Katharina Mayer, professor of artistic photography, is one of the most generous supporters of fiftyfifty. Her family portraits are staged in a quite extraordinary manner. Repeatedly she took photo-portraits of the families of famous and prominent people, including well-known author Navid Kermani and Thomas Geisel, Lord mayor of Düsseldorf. By now, she has published a second foto collection of her familia series. The identically entitled exhibition at the fiftyfifty-Galerie is a benefit event for the support of families in need. For this good cause, she donates her artist’s fee of 2,500 euros for each family portrait taken by her. More than 20,000 euros have already been raised this way.

“The vastness nearby”. Katarzyna Cudnik’s abstract macro photography touches the world of colour, with landscape structures and shows a hyper-realistic illusion. The current works present space-emphasizing, illuminated interspaces with a direct reference to painting. Pure photography, raw photos. The zoom and the format of the motif are also thematized. Pictures from small photos to large projections.

Ralf Berger sees himself as a “radical constructivist”. His photos do not focus on one perspective. Spontaneously and on location, Berger develops an ontological work that can take place simultaneously on different levels and media, questioning itself and thus enabling new insights into supposedly familiar things.
“I see my work as a constant beginning. A constant error correction. As if groping in the dark, I am mistaken upwards. My process is more like the search for an exit. I am largely a horizon worker because I know that if you go deep enough, you fall back on the surface“.

The photographs by Corinna Rosteck follow the flow of movement, the fluid, the unstable and the ephemeral and reflect their movements on water surfaces, in clouds and air currents. In doing so, the pressure and lighting engineering of the photographs causes the aesthetic obstinacy of the works to oscillate between weightlessness and materiality. Rosteck’s paintings express both the present and the change in the emotions that dance and dancers create. People who get lost and at the same time struggle for support – thus becoming a symbol of humanity and human behavior. Her work moves between factual photography and painting and opens the view to an aesthetic intermediate zone of the temporal.

Alphonsine Terego is the alter ego of the photographer Christine Denck. In dealing with her own identity, the artist created a likeness of herself. Anachronistic to the digital world, where avatars act as virtual proxies to their real users in cyberspace, Alphonsine Terego was created in the form of a wooden puppet on a string in scale 1: 2 of the artist.

As in the myth of Pygmalion, the figure experiences an ensoulment from its creator. As a blank white sheet, extremely influenceable and in search of recognition and love, Alphonsine Terego comes into the world. In the artist’s stagings, she experiences every imaginable everyday situation and more and more leads a life of her own in the digital media. The fact that she is only a wooden doll, hanging on strings, loses itself as an impression in the photographs increasingly; this creates space for a critical questioning of self-creation and self-staging.

Back from Moscow refers to the constant changes metaphorically through the many construction sites in Moscow. Deconstruction and construction change the face of the city every day and leave a mark on our perception every day. Layers of printed facades cover many old buildings in Moscow, evoking questions of reality, irreality and surreality.

Erika Anna Schumacher takes up this and works with the process of layering, the printing of photos on locally found material. The portraits on the pages of Susan Sontag’s book On Photography (Russian edition) is an attempt to connect and to refer to her thoughts on truth and humanity in photography.

Wanda Regina Koller approaches the surface of knowledge with a series of collages. Through observations of the city, object and subject can’t be differentiate, the other appears infinite. Construction sites and various styles of architecture combine with personal encounters and become poetic thoughts.

Christoph Bangert is a renowned German photojournalist who has already photographed the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for the New York Times and is currently a juror of the World Press Photo Award. In 2018 he founded the Fotobus Society with around 50 photography students from the FH Dortmund. In just one year they have grown into a large network with photography students from other universities and honorary members such as photographers Alec Soth and Carolyn Drake.
The outdoor exhibition Identity. Courage. Love. at the Schadowplatz shows works by photography students of the Fotobus Society on the themes identity and society. How do we live and what actually occupies us? How does our society work? Questions about the manifold mechanisms behind the constructions of individuality and social systems. The photographs reflect on the state of our current world and show a political and social snapshot of our society in 2019.

The new series Japan 1975–1985 by the German-Japanese multimedia artist Kanjo Také transports us into a poetic universe, a dream world. Photographs and gestural ink painting mix to form powerful new interpretations in which the artist uses his own street photographs from the 1970s and ’80s as basic images and, in the next step, reworks them either originally or with a “digital brushstroke” and other photographic alienation techniques such as solarization to defamiliarize them in diverse ways. The resulting transcendence of the original “found image” into a synesthetic abstraction is further intensified by the strict retention of the black-and-white tonality and the translation into a large format. In this series, Také masterfully continues his longstanding involvement with his own technique of “digital painting.”

Body in Pieces is an exhibition about the human body at which central contradictions of our present day become manifest. In concepts of the body, technological visions of the future collide with reactionary moral values, or the possibilities of self-design with the neo-liberal pressure of being responsible for one’s own body. And yet the body constitutes our fascinating physical basis, from which countless wishes, desires and obsessions articulate themselves. Notions of our self are increasingly expanding in the form of technology-based networking, so that, in addition to humans, multiple new protagonists have come into play, blurring the boundaries of our physical being. Accordingly, in the works of the seven international artists the body appears as a fragmented and contradictory fabric. Numerous installations, some created specifically for the exhibition, along with videos, sculptures and wall-related works will crystallize the current options held by humans in equally contemporary and timeless questions.
